Unitech Restarts Construction of South Park Project in Gurugram

Unitech restarts construction of South Park Project in Sector 70 after nearly ten years of delay, much to the relief of hundreds of prospective homeowners. After being put on hold in 2013, the project is now scheduled to resume and be finished in the next 3 years.

Just 672 of the 832 apartments that were supposed to be built over 27.4 acres of land were sold before the South Park project was put on hold. “We expect 8 to 9 towers to be completed in 24 months, but the completion of the entire project, with basements for parking and other infrastructure facilities, will take around 36 months,” stated Ashok Yadav, CEO of Unitech Ltd.

Why Unitech South Park Project Construction was Delayed?

Initiated in 2008, the project underwent a complete shutdown in 2013 due to internal discord within the corporation and financial challenges. The construction only resumed in 2011 following the approval of building designs.

But in July 2020, the recently appointed management took over after a Supreme Court ruling. They offered a settlement framework to bring the project back to life. This framework outlines a plan for finishing the unfinished housing units across Unitech’s pan-India projects. It also involves the Project Management Consultants (PMCs).

Even with the heightened efforts, the start of actual construction was postponed until July 2024 because of the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change’s (MoEF&CC) clearances and the Haryana State Pollution Control Board’s permissions.

Unitech South Park Project Gets Clearance!

Officials claim that they have secured all required clearances. Accordingly Unitech restarts construction of South Park Project in Sector 70 finally in 2024. The new management also intends to extend the development by purchasing an additional 4.31 acres of property next to the former site. This would increase the project’s total area to about 31.7 acres, in order to increase the project’s financial sustainability. The project will be safer and aesthetically more pleasing with the relocation of a 66 kV overhead line that currently passes through the site.

Meanwhile, one of the buyers, Mr. SL Juneja, who booked an apartment in 2012, expressed cautious optimism over the progress. “It has been a protracted, agonizing fight for us to wait for more than 12 years. We can now see some hope because the work has finally resumed, but the next six months will be critical in determining if they will keep to the schedule,” he said.
